Leeds Lieder

Bringing Classical Music and spoken word to Life in West Yorkshire Schools, Leeds Lieder aka Leeds Song

This was wonderful project to be involved in, and I have been fortunate to work with the Leeds Lieder team and Phil Willcox for several years, collaborating with students across West Yorkshire schools.

The 2025 Project was an incredible experience, working alongside opera singer Neil Balfour, pianist Rachel Fright, and myself, engaging with students at St. Bede’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Leeds Jewish Free School, Crawshaw Academy, Abbey Grange High School, and Bradford Academy. This initiative brings professional performers into secondary and primary schools, helping students learn a song from the world of classical music. The focus is on top-tier performance techniques and exploring text through their own creative interpretations.

Through three workshops, students learned to bring the music of American composer Aaron Copland to life. Known for his rich blend of classical and folk influences, Copland’s compositions provided the perfect opportunity for pupils to engage, respond, and connect with the music. The students embraced the high-energy sessions brilliantly, truly owning the stage.

As an artist, it is deeply rewarding to plant the seeds for the future. I love working with these talented young performers.

One response, shared in spoken word, perfectly sums up the fantastic performances from all the schools:

‘Express your emotions and not be scared,

do what you need to show that you care

You should be able to be yourself and not change for anyone

For life can be joy, hope and fun” the Leeds free Jewish school
